Low Carb Marathoning update

lsi_coverresizedB.jpgI wanted to provide another update on where I am with my training. I ran into a personal crisis of motivation when a 16-mile run went awry, and I cut the run short to “only” 8 miles. Some of the problem was the heat and humidity that morning and perhaps a bit of over-training (6 days straight of running). I was ready to become another in the just half-marathon runner. My friend in the wellness department, however, is encouraging (aka pushing) me to keep training for the marathon. I have decided to keep my easy or rest days extremely easy instead of at long run pace.

The last two weeks I have averaged a slightly lower miles than previously. I hoped a little recovery might rejuvenate the legs as well or at least my spirits to do the long runs. Some of the lower miles was due to going on vacation to Kansas City to see the Chiefs-Dolphins game. I put my time in the fitness center on the elliptical trainer, which should help sore knees. This morning I did do my first town to town run as I ran to Ankeny, IA from Polk City — a 10+ mile route over country blacktops past cows and fields. The morning started cool, but by the time I was done, I was drenched in sweat.

For those not interested in running, here is Laura’s favorite new low carb recipe:

3 min Flourless Chocolate Cake (courtesy of Linda’s Low Carb)

  • 1 TBS Butter (10 secs in microwave)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 TBS Vanilla Sugar Free syrup
  • 2 TBS +1 tsp Splenda
  • 1 TBS Heavy Cream
  • Pinch Salt
  • 2 TBS Cocoa

Combine the softened butter and all ingredients into a bowl thoroughly until as smooth as possible. Microwave for one minute.

Laura really likes it and suggested putting some whipped heavy cream on it to finish it off. Kind of oreo-like baked dessert. I hope you like it.

  3. Hi Bowulf – Saw your comments at Runner’s Lounge. I’m with your wife, I don’t think I’m ready for the Striders.

Tom says he is going to do away with that 11 minute pace thing next year as he is the race coord.
Of course I open my big mouth to the next race coordinator!! He emailed me right away, doesn’t want me to be discouraged!!

Sorry about your 16 miler. I think the heat and humidity is killing everyone (besides our other mistakes.)

Anyway, good to talk to a central Iowan. Good luck with your training.

  4. Thanks Jimmy for your continued belief in my abilities or at least perserverence. :)

Welcome Nancy — whether presumptuous or not, you definitely have put a stake in the ground. I am glad that I won’t be the only first timer at Des Moines. Chris Burch does a great job at organizing that event, and my first half last year went smooth. I am thankful now for any day in the low 80s or mornings my wife is home to get the kids off to school while I selfishly go do a run.

Now I just have to wrap my mind around that the hills around Grand Ave are going to be fun. They certainly add to the neighborhood feel to the race. About opening your mouth with the race coord around that sounds like me.

If you ever need a running partner, I am sure my wife would love the company.
